Treating Shoulder Pain in the Rocky Mount Area
When the shoulder is injured, it disrupts everything in our life. The orthopedic surgeons and doctors at CRO specialize in treating all shoulder injuries. Our physicians are nationally recognized leaders in their surgical field.
Many shoulder injuries happen while engaged in sports activities such as football, baseball, tennis or soccer. Other injuries to the shoulder occur after years of wear and tear.
The shoulder offers more motion than any other joint in the body which gives it tremendous versatility. We use our shoulders for throwing, swimming, hitting tennis balls, lifting groceries, driving and even putting on our shirts.

ORTHOPEDIC TREATMENT OF THE SHOULDER
There are many treatment options for shoulder injuries and each one will depend on the specific injury or pain issue. Your CRO Shoulder Doctor may consider a variety of treatment modalities depending on the type of injury. Physical therapy may be suggested and rehabilitation may also involve working with a shoulder surgeon. A CRO Doctor can diagnose your issues based on your symptoms and recommend an appropriate treatment
SHOULDER INJURY DIAGNOSIS
Shoulder injury diagnosis is an important component of any evaluation. In addition to physical examinations, the patient should be evaluated for concomitant injuries and any symptoms that may make it difficult to work or play. Although the clinical manifestations of the different disorders can be quite similar, diagnostic techniques have been developed to streamline the process and incorporate a “red flag” system for shoulder issues. Your CRO doctor will discuss your treatment options with you, including whether or not surgery is needed. Shoulder pain and loss of movement are common and require immediate medical attention and physiotherapy. Contact us today for shoulder pain treatment.
SHOULDER INJURIES IN SPORTS
Shoulder injuries in sports can be caused by contact with the playing surface or other objects. While player-to-player contact is the primary cause, overuse and chronic problems are secondary causes. Also, due to the repetitive arm movement and shoulder rotation involved in some sports, pain and injury to the shoulder happen frequently. This applies to many sports such as tennis, baseball, softball, swimming, and football.
Additionally, sports injuries can account for a sizable number of overall shoulder injuries that occur each year. The majority of injuries involved dislocations, torsions, or ligament damage. These injuries may require surgical repair and rehabilitation. Learn more about our Sports Medicine treatment or make an appointment today.
FROZEN SHOULDER
Frozen shoulder is a painful condition in which the movement of the shoulder becomes limited. It occurs when the strong connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint becomes thick, stiff and inflamed. The condition is called a “frozen” shoulder because the more pain that is felt, the less likely the shoulder will be used. Lack of use causes the shoulder capsule to thicken and become tight, making it even more difficult to move – it is “frozen” in its position.
IMPINGEMENT SYNDROME
Shoulder impingement syndrome is a common cause of shoulder pain. It occurs when tendons or bursa in the shoulder are impinged by bones of the shoulder. Overhead activity of the shoulder, especially repeated activity, is a risk factor for this syndrome. Examples include painting, lifting, swimming or playing overhead sports. Other risk factors include bone and joint abnormalities.
With impingement syndrome, pain is persistent and affects everyday activities. Motions such as reaching up behind the back or reaching up overhead may cause pain. Over time, it can lead to inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons and bursa.
ROTATOR CUFF TEAR
A rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that stabilize the shoulder and allow it to move. Visualize the head of the arm bone as a golf ball and the area of the shoulder blade as a golf tee. The rotator cuff serves as a sleeve that enables the ball to spin and roll while remaining on the tee.
Repetitive, overhead motions can wear down the rotator cuff muscles and are thus a common cause of injury. This is why athletes such as baseball pitchers frequently have shoulder issues. A traumatic injury, such as falling onto your arm, can also cause injury. Regardless of how it happens, the risk of a rotator cuff tear increases as we age, and the wear on our bodies accumulates.
Conservative treatments — such as rest, ice, and physical therapy — sometimes are all that’s needed to recover from a rotator cuff injury. If your injury is severe, you might need surgery.
